the skeptical oily mama - part 1

Honestly? I kinda laughed the first time I heard about the "oils". A bunch of stuff you rub on your skin and it heals you? I don't buy it. AND it's expensive to get the stuff? I really don't buy it. I had heard nothing but good from everyone I knew who used them, and that was great...for them. But not for me. I'm not a hippie, I'm a wanna-be hippie...but just not.

I've always been happy with my prescription meds and processed foods. Yeah, mom of the year huh? But seriously, it's cheaper for me to buy a $5 prescription than try to rub some oils on my feet to kill an infection. It was all just a bit bizarre to me.

When I hit an all-time low with postpartum depression and anxiety last summer, I was desperate. I hadn't slept in weeks. I was at the end of my rope. I was on 3 different medicines and it felt like they were doing absolutely nothing. Someone let me try out some "peace and calming" and I went straight to sleep. Straight. To. Sleep. I used it for a couple of nights and I was a believer. I couldn't believe the difference it made in my sleep.

It took me 9 months to finally give in and take the leap. A friend brought me about 12 samples of oils to try out so I used those for a couple of months before I finally went for it and bought the Young Living Starter Kit.

We've been using the oils for a week now and I'm loving the effects I'm seeing! The first thing I focused on was Kenzi's allergies. That poor girl was MISERABLE. She had extremely swollen eyes and a constant runny nose. After 3-4 days of allergy treatment, she is all better! The swelling in her eyes is gone and the nose stopped running! Count me a believer!

Diffuse: Lemon, Lavendar & Peppermint
Topical: (for the kids) Mix coconut oil, lavender, lemon & peppermint - rub on bottoms of feet & back
Ingest (for bigger kids & adults): Mix a drop of each oil with a spoonful of local honey, yum yum!

You can also buy capsules to take the oils, I've heard great things about them but we haven't tried it yet for allergies.

Next step: Ezcema. That's a beast in our house.

I have been getting a TON of questions about our use of oils, so I promise to share my skeptical journey through it! If you have any questions - please ask in the comments and I will do my best to answer!
