Israel: Getting there

By karakaejames. Posted in Israel 2009 | No Comments »

ISRAEL — The Flight
Monday, June 1st

Our travels began at 3pm as we arrived at the huge Oklahoma City International Airport.  All 20 Gates of it.  Our flight was at 5:15, but we arrived early just to make sure we get everyone checked in on time.  We were all good after a little struggle with Efren, my Venezuelan brother-in-law.  Luckily they decided to let him out of the country so we were all good to go! The flight from OKC to Atlanta was basically uneventful, other than the fact the airlines didn’t even seat the couples together so most of our group was randomly spread throughout the plane.  Odd.  Atlanta arrives and we begin to brace ourselves for the long flight over to Tel Aviv, Israel.  I was actually pleasantly surprised to find out the flight was (only) 12 hours.  For some reason I had 16 hours in my mind so a few hours shorter than I expected was great!

Well it was finally time to board the long awaited flight and off we go.  I’ll never understand why they make you walk through First Class to get to the cheap seats.  Are they just trying to rub it in that some of us can’t afford that? Yes, I would like a recliner for my 12 hour flight.  Thanks.  But nope, we’re jammed in a row with an old lady who won’t move to the empty seat next to her husband across the row to give us more room.  So my poor husband that can’t sleep in moving vehicles is stuck wide awake sitting straight up with about 5 inches of leg room.  Good times.  We played some inflight trivial pursuit (thanks Delta, I was impressed with that one), watched a couple movies, and I tried to sleep as much as possible.  Brook was kind enough to roam around the plane for a couple hours and let me spread out a bit and get some rest.  Before we knew it, it was 5:30 pm in Tel Aviv and we were landing!!!

ISRAEL — The Arrival
Tuesday, June 2nd

We arrive in Israel!!! We’ve been looking forward to this trip for a while now, and we are all very anxious and excited for what is to come over the next two weeks.  We make our way through customs. Again, Efren holds us up but they let him in the country and we’re all set! We loaded up on our bus to head to the hotel, but of course it’s 2 hours away. We met Abraham.  Our tour guide.  This guy is outstanding.  For some reason I’d pictured in my mind this old dude with no sense of humor and boring.  Abraham is not those things.  He’s hysterical, and his teaching is overwhelming to my brain but very interesting.  He pulls out a huge map of Israel and starts telling us about his land.  This is a good thing for me because I’m not the most “geographic” person and maps help me a lot.

On the bus ride to the hotel it all hit me and became very real.  As we drove down the road and I looked out the window at a sign that said “Nazareth”, I was speechless.  Even though I knew I was coming to this land and had prepared for it, I still had no idea what to expect.  As we drove past Nazareth and Abraham pointed out this city on the hill to us, I was extremely overtaken by the life that Jesus had lived.  And here I was, about to walk where he walked.  To experience his land and see first hand the place that his ministry took place.  It’s simply overwhelming and I couldn’t wait to get started!

Arrived in Israel!

home sweet home!

By karakaejames. Posted in Family, Israel 2009 | No Comments »

We finally arrived in Orange County late last night!! The trip was absolutely amazing, and I will get to that soon enough.  All was going great on our trip back to Oklahoma until we landed in Atlanta on Friday morning at 10am.  Our flight was at 1:45, which got delayed.  Then we changed gates.  Then we changes concourses.  Then we changed gates again.  Then we changed gates.  Yeah you get it.  Basically after 8 hours of waiting and being delayed, the flight was canceled.  Everyone scrambled to try to get flights home, and we ended up getting put on a flight out Saturday evening to get home to OK around 9:00pm.  Which meant missing Brook’s 10 Year Reunion, missing seeing our family, babies and everything we had planned for the weekend.  We were exhausted, and not thrilled.

Delta ended up putting us up in a hotel and paying for our food.  This was not an easy task and we had to practically beg for them to do anything for us but my wonderful husband got us taken care of.

We actually ended up getting a flight out earlier in the day on Saturday, and got to Oklahoma around Noon.  My brother and sis-in-law ended up getting to come visit and bring Taelyn. Goodness that girl is cute.

Taelyn Brooke

We got up to go to the airport bright and early Sunday morning and Taylor (Brook’s BFF…yup I said bff) stopped by with their new baby boy to see us for a bit before we left.

Brook & Shepherd

As we got to our gate they were asking for some people to give up their seats to fly out later that day in exchange for 600 bucks a piece in vouchers.  YES PLEASE! So we gladly accepted (I mean why not at this point!?!)

Went and took a much needed nap and got to see Sarah, Brent and sweet baby Braden! Yeah… 3 babies in 2 days.  That helps with baby fever.

$1600 in Delta flight credit later, we were VERY happy to get home late last night, get our sweet puppy and sleep in our bed!

Thank you for everyone who prayed for our trip, our flights and everything! We had an amazing time and I will begin blogging about it tonight with pictures and stories! Hooray! Stay tuned…

shalom!

By karakaejames. Posted in Israel 2009 | No Comments »

I had planned to blog everyday on our trip to share with you what we are experiencing.  However, it simply can’t be done.  I’m taking in so much, learning so much and I can’t begin to sort through it all in my brain.  It truly is a life changing experience and I’m so thankful I am here.  It will probably take me a while to really break down everything we are seeing and learning before I can share it with you, but don’t worry… I will.  I know you were concerned.

However, I will share with you a few highlights so far!

Nazareth – I really liked seeing this “village” where Jesus grew up.  It’s so incredible to see history really unfold before us and how real everything becomes by seeing the places where amazing things happened!

Dead Sea – We all know I’m not a huge fan of water, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to swim in the dead sea.  However, I did not know that you float in it!! It’s the coolest water! My favorite because I don’t have to worry about going under water :)

Dead Sea

The Jordan River – This is by far the highlight of the trip.  Brook baptized me in the Jordan River.  Such and incredible experience we were able to share together and be baptized in the place that Jesus was. More great pictures to come from this soon!

Jordan River

The Sea of Galilee – We took a boat ride across the Sea of Galilee.  This is where Jesus walked on the water.  Wow.  Can’t even begin to explain how neat that was.

Western Wall (Wailing Wall) – This was a great experience. This I am still taking in.

Western Wall

Prayers at the Western Wall

Jerusalem – Just incredible.  We’ve only spent one day here so far and I’m really looking forward to learning more and digging more into this city.  I love it!

Jeruselam

More to come soon… my brain is processing!

Israel Update

By karakaejames. Posted in Israel 2009 | No Comments »

We are well into our trip! Unfortunately, we haven’t had internet like we were hoping for and are being able to steal it from the bathroom in our hotel from somewhere nearby at the moment :) I was really excited to blog along the way and share our journey with you, but I’m writing blogs I will begin to post as we get working internet.

Basically I will sum up the trip.

WOW.

That’s all that needs to be said.  I have been incredibly touched by all we have seen and witnessed even in the last few days.  The life and ministry of Christ is more real than ever to me now.

Please continue to pray for our group! We’re getting tired and still have a week ahead of us.  I can’t wait to tell you more!!
